PSA

It has been a LONG time since I posted, but I just needed to say this:

For those of you who still think it is acceptable to make derogatory comments about developmental disabilities (or any disabilities for that matter), and the people that have them, it is not, and never has been. Please look around you, and realize that you may be commenting in the presence of parents of special needs children, or people with special needs themselves, and never know it. You may be unnecessarily adding more pain.

I have encountered this situation several times in the past few weeks alone, and it is several times too many. Instead of passing judgment and perpetuating stereotypes, why don't you educate yourselves and lend a hand? The bottom line is that all people are people first and deserve love and respect. I tend to evaluate our society on how it treats those it thinks cannot stand up for themselves, or even those who can, but shouldn't have to. Based on that, we are not looking so good.
